Introduction / System Requirements
Subtitles of the Movie
I'm going to spend a little time talking about the kind of computer and RAM you might want to have so you can enjoy Encore to the fullest. So I'm going to go over the system requirements. Now, chances are very good that if you bought a computer within the past two or three years, you're already good to go. The only thing you're going to need, if you really want to take advantage of the Blu-ray functionality inside of Encore is a Blu-ray burner. So let's go ahead and get started. I'll go ahead and begin with the Macintosh platform. You're going to need to have an Intel processor and if you only use the Windows partition on your Mac, if you have the Intel processor, of course make sure you install Windows using Boot Camp and a licensed version of Windows. You're going to now want to have Mac OS 10, the latest version of course, 10.5 which is Leopard or higher. As far as RAM, you're going to want one gigabyte of RAM for digital video and if you're going to be doing high-def authoring which, once again, is Blu-ray, you're going to want to have at least two gigabytes of RAM. Now, let me explain RAM very quickly and this explains this for both Macintosh and Windows. RAM is not your hard drive space. That's where you store your files that you save. RAM is your computer's ability to think. The more RAM you have, the more you can do and usually the faster you can do it. So if you only have, let's say, 500 megabytes of RAM, which is not the case for anybody anymore, you'd be able to open up your computer and that's it. Your computer needs RAM to even function so it needs to have information to store the stuff that's going on while you're working. So the more RAM you have, the more you can do. So keep that in mind. As far as your hard drive, you have to have at least ten gigabytes of additional space on your hard drive that's free for installation of the application and any of the movies that come with it and especially to work with. When you're dealing with digital video, you're going to need a lot of space on your hard drive, so if you have a new computer, chances are you're good to go. The latest drives are like 250 gigabytes and up. OK, as far as your hard drive's RPM or the spinning speed, you're going to need 7200 RPM for DV authoring and for your monitor you should have a 32-bit video card with a resolution of 1280 by 960 minimum. You should have a Core Audio compatible sound card, a DVD-ROM drive and, of course, if you're going to burn Blu-ray, you're going to need a Blu-ray drive. For DVD burning, you should have a SuperDrive, which most Macs have. You're going to need QuickTime 7 to use the QuickTime features and if you're going to download any content from the web, of course, you're going to need to have an Internet connection. I recommend high speed such as DSL or cable. Let's head over to the Windows side. You're going to need an Intel Pentium 4 with at least a 1.4 gigahertz processor for digital video and for high-definition content, 3.4 gigahertz processor. Alright. So also you might want to have an Intel Centrino, an Intel Xenon, Intel Core Duo to do work and such things as far as your processor is concerned. You're going to want to have Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition with the latest service pack or any other version of Windows Vista which is Home, Premium, Business, Ultimate or Enterprise and for your RAM you're going to want one gigabyte of RAM for digital video and two gigabytes of RAM for high-def content. Same thing with the Mac. Ten gigabytes of available hard drive space and the same requirements as the Macintosh except for in this case we're going to want Microsoft Direct X or an ASIO compatible sound card. You're also going to want a DVD-ROM drive, Blu-ray and for DVD creation, a DVD +R or -R burner. So for the creation of capturing video on a Windows machine, you're going to want an OHCI compatible IEEE 1394 port for DVD and HDV capture so you can export the tape and transmit to ADD device. Now, Windows people also get to use QuickTime, so check out the Apple website, Apple.com and look for QuickTime. It's free. Download that if you don't have it already and you're going to want to have an Internet connection, once again, for accessing things online. So those are your requirements for using Encore CS3 on your platform of choice.
