Interface / Pickwhips
Subtitles of the Movie
In applications where you make a connection from one item to another, in the case of parenting in some applications, you would normally choose from a list the item that's going to be the child and the item that's going to be the parent. In Encore, you can make similar connections using something called a Pickwhip. It looks like a little Cinnabon and for those of you who go to the mall, I'm sure you've seen and smelled the aroma of those delicious little cakes that have the frosting on top and when I show you this little tool here, you'll recognize right away that little swirly thing looks like their logo. So the pickwhip allows you to click and drag out a little whip object that when nothing can be selected, will snap back with a nice little animation. What the pickwhip allows you to do is instead of going through a drop-down list to choose something in the list like so, you can literally see the item in your interface and click and drag the whip to that item to make the association. So once again, it's a parenting something. You can say I want this item to be locked to this item or I want this item to point to this item and it's going to be something that we're going to use as we start to build menus and that kind of thing. So let me show you how this works. When I click on the pickwhip and I drag it to an item it can't make any association to, I get the little international no symbol and this means that if there's nothing here that has a value or property that can be linked to whatever the field is we're trying to make the link to, even when I come down here, nothing. So if I let go of the mouse, it snaps back into place. What happens when it does find something that it could link to? Well, if I click and drag the pickwhip over here, you see that we have a now highlighted circle or rectangle shape over this field here and have an arrow that tells me that this is something that can indeed put a property in the field that currently says not set. So I click, let go of the whip and now those words and this menu are now linked in here. So that's one way of using the pickwhip. I'll go to the menu now and do the same thing. So I can click on the pickwhip, move my mouse, nothing, nothing but now this can be linked, this, this and everything here that actually highlights. And it's a really good way to see visually what you can lock the pickwhip onto. Once again, I can click on something and it changes the text inside of here. So wherever you see the pickwhip, just, you know, once we learn more about the interface, you'll be able to quickly drag and drop this whip onto something instead of having to go through a list and trying to find something to make the association with. It's a really cool tool and I think you'll like using it quite a bit.
