Interface / Workspace
Subtitles of the Movie
Whenever you create a brand-new Encore project, you're working in one of several different workspaces. As you can see here, this is a workspace. It contains your interface. It has your panels and your groups. These are groups of tabs inside of the panel and we also have a toolbar and we also have the ability to modify this. Later on in an upcoming lesson I'll show you how to customize the workspace and make it your own. But for now, let's talk about how you can actually move around in this workspace and change it based on one of the presets available to you. So what are we looking at? Once again, these guys are called Panels. And when you put your mouse in it, the whole thing lights up with a little, yellow border. These are your Tabs and when you see more than one Tab in the little Panel group like this, that's exactly what it is; a group. Up here we have a little grabber, these little dots. These allow you to tear Panels off so you can put them elsewhere. So let's say that I want to put my Monitor Tab down here. Click on this little grabber here and drag your mouse and then let go when you see the top part of this group light up. Now it's down there. If I want to close a Panel, I click on the little X here and that Panel is closed. If I want to get it back, it's always going to be living under the Window Menu. So I go to Window, Monitor and it returns to where I placed it. Now, let's show you something else here. You will notice that when I do click and drag, these little fields light up. These are called Drop Zones and they're an interactive way for you to see exactly where it's going to wind up when you let go of your mouse. So if I put it in the middle, it winds up in that group. If I click and drag it to one of the edges here, it becomes its own Panel group by itself in the middle here. So I can click and tear it off once again and put it here or, if I want to once again put it in another group, just drag it down like so. It's a really nice way to work inside of the workspace. Now, what if there's a particular panel that you really want to see more of or a panel that you want to see less of. Well, one way, of course, we talked about is to close that panel by clicking on the X. But sometimes you just want to move it over. So you can put your mouse at the intersection between the panels like so and click and drag and the interface will adjust itself. So some things will collapse while others expand and it's really, really quite cool. This allows me to focus on just what I want to see at the moment without having to close a panel. So I can click and I can drag things up so I can focus on my library, maybe pull an item out. Now I'm finished with the library but I know I'm going to come back to it soon so I can click and drag it right on back down. Really, really nice way to work. And each one of these guys also has a little menu at the end here. So I can click and I can also choose some of the categories in here, such as Undocking. If I Undock, the panel now lives on its own and floats above the rest of the interface. So I can go back here again and I can close it or I can close the frame or just leave it there or, once again, you can close it. Let me click up here this time to close this panel and get rid of it. There's also the ability to open up a Contextual Menu inside each one of these guys. And the menu will change based on which panel you're in. So if I right click on the Project one, I get to Import Assets. If I right click down here in Slideshows, I will be able to work with Slideshow categories or whatever's down here or Timelines. So as you can see, wherever you are, you go right click and do something different based on whatever panel you're currently in. And of course, sometimes you need to have something actually in there to interact with. So that is how you can use the Workspace to your advantage in Encore. Now, last but not least, Adobe's provided for you Workspaces. So if you want to focus on Menu Design, choose Menu Design. If you want to work with Navigation, choose that. And when you want to work with Slideshows, and so on. And once again, don't forget. I'm going to show you guys how to put your own Workspace in this list later on in an upcoming lesson called Customizing Workspaces.
