Interface / The Toolbar
Subtitles of the Movie
Encore, like many applications, provides you with a set of tools that live in a nice, convenient location appropriately called a Toolbar. It lives under the main menu, which is right here. So this is our Toolbar and there are only a few tools but you really don't need that many tools inside of Encore since we're not really doing a whole bunch of graphics work or anything. You're pretty much going to design menus, link them to buttons and then test out your projects. So what do we have here? First of all, when you hover your mouse over a tool, a box will open up and it's called a Tool Tip. And you can find out what the name of the tool is just in case your forget. You also see at the end of that little Tool Tip we have in parenthesis a shortcut where applicable. So we have V for the Selection Tool. The Selection Tool allows you to make selections. I know that sounds crazy, but that's what it does. You click on it and then you can click on something inside of a menu, for example, like these guys down here. Sometimes, though, it's a little difficult to grab things. For example, I'm trying to grab this Advance the Cause text and I really can't do it right now. So I have to use another tool, which lives right next to the Selection Tool and if you use Illustrator or Photoshop, you guys might recognize the white arrow as the Direct Selection Tool. It allows you to make more refined selections. So I can now click and grab that block of text and anything else and work with it. So I can change the text or whatever I need to do. So once again, broad selections with this, like moving big blocks of things that might be grouped and this guy here to make selections inside of the selection of grouped items that are hard to grab with this tool here. Then we have our Move Tool. Now, generally I don't usually grab this tool because I can do the same thing with the Direct Selection Tool. I can click and then move my item. But just in case you can use the Move Tool and you can still move your item with this as well. So you can click and move things around. Over here we have the Rotate Tool, which when you click on it allows you to click and rotate an object inside of the field, which is kind of cool. Or you can put your mouse at the corners and rotate as well. So it's up to you how you want to use this tool. Over here we have our Text Tool and this allows you to click text and create text for buttons, for example. Very handy and we'll talk more about how to use this later on when we actually make buttons. Now we have our Vertical Text Tool next to this guy which allows you to make text that goes vertically. This is our Zoom Tool; in other applications also known as the Magnifying Glass. So you can click on this guy here, then click to draw out an area of interest, let go of the mouse and then zoom in to that area. When you want to zoom out, you're going to want to hold down the Alt or Option key on your keyboard and when you see a little negative sign appear inside the glass itself, click and you can zoom back out. Very handy. If you want to, you can also use this guy down here, this little zoom level, and you can zoom in based on the numbers in this particular field or choose Fit when you have gone way too far and you want to just get everything back into view. This button here allows you to edit your menu inside of Photoshop and it's a really handy way to just jump right over to that application and get to work. And we also have the ability to preview a menu that we're working on with this button. And this will allow you to interact with your menu as though you were actually using it on a DVD player for a Blu-ray player. So we'll talk more about that guy later on once we actually start to build some menus.
