Customization / Preferences
Subtitles of the Movie
Applications give you the ability to change how you work with it and you'll find those Preferences in two different locations depending on whether you're working on the Macintosh or the Windows platforms. So, on a Mac you will generally find Preferences located on the name of the application window itself. In this Encore, Preferences. On Windows PCs you will find the Preferences generally under the Edit Menu. OK, so since I am on the Mac, I'm going to go to Encore, Preferences and I'll just select General. By the way, choosing any of these will open up all of them at the same time. So you can start anywhere and access them all at the same time. Alright, the first thing we have here is General and it's asking you what the default television standard that you like to work in whenever you start a new project will be. In my case, I'm in North America, so NTSC is what I like to develop most of the time, but if I'm in Europe or Japan I might want to choose PAL. Well, actually NTSC is Japan as well, but parts of Europe is PAL. I can also choose my Playback Quality and of course if you choose Draft it's going to give you a more grainy quality, but it would play back more quickly if you have a slower machine. So I'm going to keep mine on High. For Audio Out, you can choose where you want to output your audio and you can choose the audio device on your system. I currently use a Sapphire, a FireWire device to listen through my headset when I'm recording these tutorials, so I choose Sapphire. But once I'm done recording I go back to my Max built-in line output so that my speakers will then allow me to listen to my audio. So if I want to play some iTunes for example or some audio books, I won't listen through my FireWire device. I use this guy to do these professional recordings. So this is where you can choose your device. An audio device or a MIDI device. The Media category allows you to select where on your hard drive Encore will store its library. I usually leave this at the defaults so that Encore will automatically find its own Assets, which is in the library here and as you see, it's in the Applications Folder in the Adobe Encore CS3 Folder and the Library Folder. You can change this by clicking on the Browse Button and navigate somewhere else on your hard drive if you'd like to. If you'd like to clear the cache, this will clean your database and pretty much wipe Encore's memory so you can have a fresh platform to work with. I often flush the cache in certain locations such as Combustion or anything that allows me to do so that deals with video and audio and that kind of stuff because those types of files can really do a number on your computer, especially if you do one project after another project after another project without restarting your system. Menus allow you to dictate how you want your button routing to go and I will spend much more time on this later on in the tutorial. So we'll talk more about buttons and all that kind of stuff later on. Preview allows you to decide how you're going to preview in Encore. I have mine currently at a four to three ratio; letterbox. I can also choose a player region code and this is interesting because some players, even video game systems, are locked to a specific region, which means you can't play a DVD or a video game in a device that has a specific region associated with it. For example, in Region One, I'm in Canada, the United States or US Territories. So that means I won't be able to play a DVD from China if it's a locked system or Russian or anything like that. And you will once again find this very, very common because this helps to prevent piracy and this means that if you're a pirate and you are trying to bootleg some DVDs from another region, you're going to have to have some pretty sophisticated stuff to do that. So that's what that will help you do. I can also select my Audio Language, which is English and I can go to this list and choose from a wide variety, as well as my Subtitle Language. Once again, a wide variety of countries. For my Timelines I can determine how long a still image should last by default. So it currently it's set to six seconds but I can make this as long as I like and this is especially true of slideshows. So you can set the default here. Subtitles will last for two seconds and you can also change the other defaults as well; Audio Tracks, the Subtitle Tracks and more. And User Interface. Now, by default, Encore has a pretty bright interface and it's too bright for my eyes. I don't like that so I generally like to slide every application that will allow me to to a very dark gray. It's a little easier I believe on my eyes and it let's met see the graphics and the colors contained with them much more clearly. So if you're doing a lot of video work or color correction, I highly suggest that you go with a darker interface so the colors pop more visually to you. If I go back to default, you see that this is pretty bright and I don't really get the contrast I need to make good graphic decisions. And of course, you can go lighter if you want to if you'd prefer. But once again, I'm going to the dark side. I can also choose to have viewers for separate elements such as timelines, menus, slideshows. I can show tool tips and I can have Encore beep whenever it renders something and completes it. So these are the Preferences that you'll find in Encore. Once again, on a Mac you'll find them in the Encore Menu and on a Windows PC you will find them in the Edit Menu.
