Adobe Dreamweaver: Creating CSS Layouts Tutorials

Introduction / What You Need to Know

Subtitles of the Movie

This tutorial uses Dreamweaver CS3 to demonstrate how to create and modify web pages formatted using Cascading Style Sheets. It assumes a working knowledge of the Dreamweaver workspace and interface elements, such as the difference between Code View, Split View and Design View. Also you'll need to be familiar with the various workspaces and panels and windows in Dreamweaver, particularly the Properties Inspector. You should be very familiar with how to use this to look at the properties of various Dreamweaver elements, Files, Windows, very helpful as well as the Insert Panel up here. But really you should be familiar with most of the general workspaces and basic workings and interface elements of Dreamweaver. If you're new to Dreamweaver or Dreamweaver CS3, I recommend viewing my VTC Dreamweaver CS3 Tutorial before viewing the movies in this tutorial. Notice that we have tutorials in Dreamweaver 8, Introductory and Advanced as well as MX 2004. Although I use Dreamweaver CS3 in my demonstrations in this tutorial you can use any version of Dreamweaver to work with Cascading Style Sheets. Although the later versions of Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver 8 and CS3 pretty much streamline working with Cascading Style Sheets and provide valuable tools that are not available in earlier versions of Dreamweaver. You'll see most of these differences in the CSS Styles Window, this may be a new window to you, but you're definitely going to get very familiar with this window quickly in this tutorial. But you'll notice if you're using an older version of Dreamweaver that there are a lot of nice tools and views here in this window that are not available in other versions of Dreamweaver. Notice for example that you have great display of your styles and different formats, so it's easier to view your style definitions here in the CSS Styles Window as well as there's extra tools here in the Properties Inspector for applying styles. It just generally makes it easier to do a lot of the work that we're going to do in this tutorial if you use one of the later versions of Dreamweaver. Now this tutorial does not assume any previous knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets, it's also not imperative that you know HTML before completing this tutorial. But a working knowledge of the more important HTML Tags such as the Body, Paragraph, Table and other common tags will greatly facilitate your understanding of CSS, particularly when applying styles to page elements, We're going to be using the Tag Selector here in Dreamweaver quite a bit so that you'll see these tag names and it's very helpful if you understand what these tags are. Also we'll be looking quite a bit here in using either Split View or Code View with the underlying code particularly when applying styles to our documents. So although we'll mostly be working in Dreamweaver Design Mode at many junctions of these tutorials, we'll be looking at the underlying HTML code using either the Code View or the Split View. So in these cases a previous understanding of HTML will obviously be very helpful. In these cases you might want to refer to an HTML Guide Book or other resource to get a fuller understanding of how I'm working with the CSS. But for now let me move onto the next section of the tutorial, Core Concepts of CSS and give you some information about Style Syntax and Structure, how to create Embedded Styles in contrast to creating an External Style Sheet. How to organize and manage External Style Sheets and also give you a more full introduction to the CSS Styles Window here in Dreamweaver CS3.
