Now, Dreamweaver, if set up correctly, can update automatically links to and from a document whenever you move or rename the document within a local site. For example, here I have my Files Window open, my Geek Manuals site and I've set up Dreamweaver to update links automatically with this site so notice if I change my Style1.CSS File from Style 1 to Style, Dreamweaver will ask me if I want to update the links in the following pages which are using that style sheet: Glossary, Index, Index 1 or Backup. Click on Update and Dreamweaver has gone ahead and updated those links automatically for me. This feature works best when you store your entire site on your local disk as I've done here. Dreamweaver does not change the files on the remote server until you put the local files up onto your host here in the FTP manager or client in the Files Window. Now, to make this updating process faster, Dreamweaver can create a cache file in which to store information about all the links in your local folder. This cache file is updated invisibly as you add, change or delete links on your local site. So let me demonstrate in this movie how to enable this automatic link updating and how to set up a cache and maintain it. First let me show you how to enable automatic link updating. In the Windows operating system, choose Edit, Preference from the Main Menu and on the Macintosh choose Dreamweaver Preferences. That'll bring up the Preferences Dialog. In the General Category, right here, Update Links When Moving Files. In the Drop-Down choose Always, Never or Prompt. Always automatically updates all links to and from a selected document whenever you move or rename it. Never does not automatically update all links to and from a selected document when moving or renaming and Prompt, which is the default and the one that I usually use displays that dialog box that you noticed that lists all the files affected by the change. Click Update to update the links in these files or click Don't Update to leave the files unchanged. Choose your option and then click OK to close the Preferences Dialog. Next what you'll need to do is to create a cache file for your site. To do this choose Site, Manage Sites from the Main Menu. Select a site from the list here. Click on Edit, open up the Advanced Settings and then right here notice that you have Enable Cache. The cache maintains file and asset information in the site. This speeds up the Asset Panel and Link Management Features. Make sure there's a checkmark next to that Enable Cache Option. Click on Save, click on Done to close out those dialogs. Now, the first time you change or delete links to files in your local folder after starting Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver will prompt you to load this cache. If you click Yes, Dreamweaver loads the cache and updates all the links to the file you just changed. If you click No, the change is noted in the cache but Dreamweaver does not load the cache or update the links. That will then conclude this section of the tutorial covering how to create, manage and update and fix your links in Dreamweaver CS5. The next topic is client-side forms. You've no doubt used forms in a website before, perhaps to purchase something online or to provide an address to have something sent to you. Dreamweaver has very robust form creation and editing tools which I will cover in detail in the next section of the tutorial.
