Introduction to Dreamweaver CS4 / New Features pt. 2
Subtitles of the Movie
Continuing my review of new features in the CS4 version of Dreamweaver we get to html data sets, with Dreamweaver's new HTML data sets functionality you can create your data in a standard HTML table, a series of DIV tags or even an unordered list and then choose inserts Spry down here at the bottom, Spry data sets, you'll need to save your data first before you do that, that will bring up the Spry data set dialogue where you can select the data type, HTML or XML, you can give the data set a name, you can detect tables, DIVs or list or a custom combination. So with this feature what it will allow you to do is integrate data into a dynamic table on the page with sortable columns, a master detail layout or other sophisticated displays. Dreamweaver CS4 also has improved Photoshop integration as well as improved compatibility and functionality, for example you can now drag and drop an Adobe Photoshop PSD file into a Dreamweaver page to create an image smart object, I have a Photoshop file right here in my working folder and go ahead and drag and drop this into my table and that will open up the image preview dialogue or I can go ahead and optimize this file it was a Photoshop native file format, PSD I can convert this to a JPEG a GIF or a ping file by optimizing it which is another fancy way of saying I'm going to make it smaller but maintain image quality, I can set this JPEG setting to smaller file or better quality or set the quality to a custom value over here with this slider once you've determined your file format whether JPEG, GIF or ping and set a compression setting, click OK, and then you'll want to save this new JPEG image in your site root folder, in this case it's my working folder in my Dreamweaver CS4 folder, let's call it Smart Object, give it a JPEG extension, click save, go ahead and provide some alt text for the search engines and for browser readers, let's say Photoshop Smart Object here, click OK and then it will be placed right in the table, notice that there's a little icon in the upper left hand corner that says the images are synched, so in other words you have increased integration between Photoshop and Dreamweaver, you don't need to use the latest version of Photoshop to get this feature, I actually created this image in Photoshop PS3, another notable feature is that Dreamweaver now integrates Subversion software for a better file check in check out experience with file versioning, rollback and much much more. Once you've defined Subversion as your version control system, you can update your site to get the latest versions of its pages directly from within Dreamweaver, no third party utility or Command Line interface will be required, set up this Subversion option by going to Site, Manage Site, so then go ahead and Edit an Existing Site or Create a New Site here in the Version Control category you have Access None or Subversion, if you choose Subversion then you have your various version control settings access protocol, server address, and so on. And one more notable feature is that Dreamweaver CS4 now provides Adobe air authoring support, you can create multi platform Desktop applications from your Dreamweaver HTML and Javascript sites with this new air authoring support. So in conclusion, Dreamweaver is a rather mature HTML development environment so the changes to the environment this time around in CS4 are not radical but still many of these features that I've outlined in the last two movies are still very useful. With this new release of Dreamweaver, Adobe is helping the development community move more towards standards compliants which is great for everyone, web developers, designers and visitors alike.
