Site Setup / Creating a Site pt. 2
Subtitles of the Movie
If you're working from behind a firewall perhaps at work or at school you'll want to check the use firewall option and then click on the firewall settings. Check with your network administrator to get the settings here you'll need to get through that firewall. And also use secure FTP if available. Maintain synchronization information will allow you to maintain sync between your local files on your local computer and your remote files on your server. Again notice, remember that we're using the local and remote info category to get our site set up. Automatically upload files to server on save will save you the trouble of having to upload any files you're saving to your local computer, although I don't generally recommend enabling this option for Dreamweaver beginners. It's very easy to make a mistake. Save the file locally and you're in essence erasing perhaps a good file up on your server. Enable file check in and check out is great if you're working on a team with Dreamweaver and you don't want to have two people working on the same file at the same time so there's a check in and check out facility that you can enable. And I generally recommend using the file check out again if you're working on a team of Dreamweaver developers. Notice that if you do enable check in and check out you need a check out name and an email address. Dreamweaver uses this for example when you've checked out a file and someone else tries to get it. It will send both you and the person requesting the file an email saying, "nope James has the file open so you can't use it right now." That'll do it for setting up a site including defining the site which is an all-important process that you must do before you get to work on your new site. I know the temptation is usually to go ahead and start creating pages but you'll want to review all the steps that I've covered in this movie before you get started actually working on the site. After you've defined your site, you can access that site at any time via the main menu under site manage sites. That will bring up the manage sites dialog. We can go back and edit any of the settings that you've just established when defining your site. Notice you can also create a new site from here as well as duplicate the site or remove the site. You can export and import sites as well as get help on how to manage your sites in Dreamweaver. I definitely recommend that if you have any troubles with your sites that you get some help here and check out the various help documents because if you don't set up your site correctly it just gives you a lot of trouble everywhere down the line in working with Dreamweaver. You'll also need to be very careful with your folder and file management, which I'll be covering a little bit later in this tutorial.
