Let me now demonstrate how to setup Dreamweaver so that it will update your links automatically whenever you move or rename a document within a local site. Now this automatic updating feature works best when you store your entire site on your local disk. Dreamweaver does not change files in the remote folder until you put the local files up onto your host server, or check them into the remote server. To make this updating process faster, Dreamweaver can create a cache file in which to store information about all the links in your site. It will do this for all the links in your local folder. This cache file is updated invisibly as you add, change or delete links on your local site. To enable this automatic link updates, you'll want to go into the preferences area. So choose in the windows operating system, edit, preferences, in the bottom of that menu that will bring up the preferences dialog here. On the Macintosh operating system this will be Dreamweaver preferences from the main menu. In the preferences dialog box select the general category from the list over here on the left. In the document options sectionÉlet's go back to general categoryÉin the document options section right here select an option from the update links when moving files popup menu right here. Your options here are: always, this automatically updates all links to and from a selected document whenever you move it or rename it, never does not automatically update all links to and from a selected document when you move or rename it, and then prompt, which is what I usually set mine to, displays a dialog box that lists all the files affected by the change. You'll then click the update button to update the links in these files, or click don't update to leave the files unchanged. Go ahead and click on the OK button when you've set your update preferences. Now to facilitate this automatic updating, you'll also want to create a cache file for your site. Do this from the site manage sites menu. That will bring up the manage sites dialog. Select the site that you're working on, and then click on edit. This will bring up our familiar site definition dialog box. Click on the advanced tab to display the advanced category of the site definition dialog box. Select local info, and then here in the local info category select enable cache right here. The first time you change or delete links to files in your local folder after starting Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver prompts you to load the cache. If you click yes in the dialog that you'll get Dreamweaver loads the cache and updates all the links to the file you just changed. If you click no, the change is noted in the cache, but Dreamweaver does not load the cache or update the links. Let me go ahead and demonstrate now the automatic fix link feature. I'm going to go ahead before I leave this dialog, leave my check next to the enable cache option, click OK to close out of the dialog, click undone to shut the manage sites window. Now from the files window let me go ahead and change the name of a file that I have a link to in my currently open document, that's this file right here. So if I change the name of this file by deleting that i right there, I might cause a potential broken link. So I'm going to change the name, let me get rid of that i. Then click out there anywhere in the files window. And because I have a site cache defined and generated, Dreamweaver's generated it for me, it now finds that broken link, and it asks me do I want to update the links in the following files. In the check links dot HTML page I have a link to the lorem ipsum file with an i and because I've deleted the i that link will break. Instead Dreamweaver will update the link for me. So I'm going to click on the update button there. I almost always have Dreamweaver update those changes for me. Let's go ahead and change it back. Let's take my HTML file and add that I back to the name. Click over here to the right. Dreamweaver catches the change. And again because I've setup my site cache, Dreamweaver will keep track of these changes for me. This is another good reminder to always have that site cache up to date. First create one and then have it up to date. And then if you're going to make any changes to file or folder names or locations, to always do those changes here in the files window. By the way, if you do need to update your site cache here in the files window, under site there's an option at the bottom for recreate site cache. Notice that Dreamweaver went through and updated all of those files there. Let me go ahead and do that again, recreate site cache. You can see it very quickly there at the bottom of my window, but it did recreate site cache, it checked all the links that I've setup currently in all the pages in this current site. And that will wrap up this section of the course on how to setup and maintain your links in Dreamweaver CS3. In this section of the tutorial you've learn about absolute versus relative links. You've learned how relative paths work. Also about document versus site route relative paths. You've learned how to link to files, how to link to specific locations in a document, how to create email links, how to test and update your links, and also how to update your links automatically.
