Introducing Adobe Contribute CS3 / What Contribute Can Do

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, let's take a closer look at what Contribute can do for you. Contribute's a great software program, so let's take a look at some of those specific items that will affect your Contribute use. For Contribute to be used, the software program must be loaded on the desktop of any PC that's going to be used for editing. For example, the shortcut on my desktop. Each of those software applications must be licensed. Contribute's not a highly-priced program, so you just need to make sure that you have one for each desktop. You'll also need a web developer. You'll need somebody to go into a web-development program, such as this, and create the site for you, reason being Contribute is an editing program, it's not a development program, so keep that in mind. Each page that you edit has to be done one at a time within Contribute and then you upload each of those changes individually. You can't do a whole set of pages all at once. If you need to do a group of pages, make sure that you give that to your web developer. They can do massive site changes on a template or with the find and replace. Another positive aspect of Contribute is users can't get into that source code. It definitely will save you a lot of work and a lot of time because they're going to be editing the basic text, the images, things like that. Contribute is a great program because you only need one program to access, edit and upload files. You used to have to have a separate FTP program to get that file up to the website when the changes were created. So now you only need Contribute. Lots of users can update a website in Contribute and how that happens is Contribute allows those files to be check in and checked out. In this program, you can see the little padlock. That's the check-in feature. This automatically happens in Contribute. In my web development program here, I have to check them out and check them in myself. Whereas in Contribute, I can just click edit, it checks it out for me and then when I click publish, it checks it right back in. I don't have those extra steps. The reason that's there is so that if I check it out, no one else can check it out and overwrite my changes. There are recovery options within Contribute to roll back. If somebody would accidentally publish something that was an error, you can roll back and go back to a previous page. Administrators for Contribute users don't have to worry about styles and coding. When you work with Contribute, you can automatically use the CSS style sheet that is part of the website. So users can actually apply those specific styles and maintain consistency. You can also assign different permissions to users, allow some to edit text, allow others to do pictures, allow some to make edits but they can't publish. Maybe somebody else has to check it before it actually goes on the website. You can use templates with Contribute. They can easily be used in the website design. They save a lot of time, so if you have any massive site changes, templates can automatically be updated. And again, they work really well within Contribute. And finally, Contribute is a fairly inexpensive option. When you consider the amount of safety and security it adds for users, it gives users the relief of not having to worry about messing anything up and it definitely saves the administrative person a lot of time because you don't have to worry about that anymore. So we've told you all about Contribute in this first chapter. Now let's move on and learn a little more.
