I want to at least mention custom functions even though we will not be covering these in this course but I think it's important you'd be aware that it is possible to create your own custom functions in ColdFusion. These custom functions that you would create are referred to as user-defined functions or quite often people just reference them as a UDF. This course does not cover creating these functions but the tags you would use if you were interested in doing so are the CFFunction, CFArgument and CFReturn tags or you can create them using the CFScript tag in a manner more like a JavaScript type scripting. You call a UDF in the same manner that you call built-in functions. So you put your function name, you need the pound signs and however else you're going to call a function. It's no different than the built in functions when you going to call it however you do have to be sure you defined the function before you try and call your custom function or ColdFusion will have no idea what it is you're trying to do and will throw an error. For this reason often UDFs are put into their own CFM page so a page would contain a whole list of functions and then you can use and include to pull those in or you put them into a custom tag or component. So custom functions, custom tags and ColdFusion components are all beyond the scope of this course but I think it's important for you to at least understand, yes, it's possible to do custom functions in ColdFusion that's why I want to mention it here. So custom functions really greatly expand ColdFusion and the ability to perform a variety of tasks that you might want to reuse over and over again so that is a custom function in ColdFusion.
