Using Captivate Design Templates you can ensure that your projects adhere to visual design guidelines. For example, in this project file you can see that I have a slide that has a Text Caption on it. Well, let's say that I want to apply the VTC Visual Design to this particular Text Caption. To do that I can go to the Window Menu and I can choose Design Template. Now in here you can see that I have a number of available Templates as well as the recently used template and at the moment we're not using any template in this particular project. So to apply a Visual Design Guideline that I've created using a Design Template specifically for VTC I can now just click Apply like so. Now immediately you can see that this particular Text Caption type has changed to the blue text caption we have on screen, but there are some differences as well. For example, if I now scroll down here, select this slide and create a New Slide and I then apply the VTC Design Template to that new slide, the background of this particular slide is now painted in the VTC blue. OK, so now let me show you how you can create your own Design Template. I'll just start by closing this file. So, to create a Design Template just click Design Template from the Welcome screen. Now Captivate will automatically open a blank document with a file suffix cpdt, as you can see here and includes 7 slides. Now the reason why it includes 7 slides is because that's how many slides it takes to put all the various different objects that are available to be styled in the Design Template. So, for example, you can see here that I have a Text Caption. Now if I double-click on that I can open the Text Caption dialog and from the Caption Type Menu I can change the design - I'll choose Glass Blue - and I can also change the size of that text - make it 16. But what I can't do is I can't highlight and change the text itself. All I can do is apply formatting options. To illustrate that point further, if I now click on Slide 3 and then double-click on the Click Box, nothing happens. All I can do here is change the design of the success, the failure and the hint captions. Now to add even further confusion to the mix, if we look here in the Menu Bar you can see that I don't even get an Insert Menu so you can't even insert new objects onto any of the slides that make up a Design Template. What you can do, however, is change the background color. So to do that I'm going to select Slide 1, I'm going to double-click and then choose Custom and then I'm going to add a new color in here which is going to be pound 216CA1 and now if I just click on that color and click OK that's now applied to this new Design Template. Now it's also important to understand that you can change the background image. You can see the Change background image button here. But Design Templates are created at 640 by 480 pixels and this means that if the project file you're applying the Design Template to is a different size then the background image will be rescaled to accommodate the dimensions of your project, which can result in the background becoming pixelated. Now, as well as being able to define the visual design properties for objects you can also apply project-specific settings. So if I choose Edit, choose Preferences, notice the limited number of options available in the Edit Menu and also in the Preferences dialog box. From the category Recording I can choose a Default Style for my success, failure, hint, and captions, as well as the highlight box. Now in addition, if I click on Project you can see in here that the only option I have available is to add a Preloader. We'll be learning about Preloaders later in the course, so for now I'll just click OK. And the last thing that I want to demonstrate here is that if I go to the Project Menu and then choose Skin Editor from here I can choose a different Skin for my Design Template. And in this case I'm going to choose Artica. So, having done that I'll click OK and now I'll choose File followed by Save or Save As and in here I'm going to call this one VTC Design like that. So I'll click Save and then close the Design Template. OK, so to save some time I've already opened the Project File I wish to apply my new Template to and so I'll click here and if I scroll down you can see that I've now got two VTC Templates. So I'm going to choose Apply All, that will now apply the Text Caption type I specified in the Design Template to all the Text Captions here in my Project File. It's also messed about here with the size and everything else, but of course I can change these, so there's no problem there. But as well as that, if I go to the Project Menu and choose Skin Editor you can see that the Skin that I selected in the Design Template has also been added to this new file.
