Software Training / Multi Mode Recording

Subtitles of the Movie

Now that you've seen how to create a single project let's raise the bar and look at how you can create multiple projects from a single Capture session. When working on software training projects as well as wanting to show a series of steps you'll probably also want to let the learner have a go at carrying out the steps for themselves and then assess that performance. Adobe Captivate simplifies this task by enabling you to perform Multimode Recording, so with the New Project dialog box already on screen I'm going to click OK and again we'll use Automatic Recording Mode but this time I'm going to click on the icon, deselect Demonstration and then select Training, as well as Assessment. Notice also that you can define your Automatic Recording Settings by clicking on the Settings button. This, then, displays that Mode category of the Preferences that you saw in the previous tutorial. You can also apply Advanced options by choosing the option Advanced. Now from the Captions In menu you can specify which language you want your captions to be created in. As well as that you can also choose this option called Rerecording Script. The idea behind this option was to automate the Rerecording of tasks with similar steps. The problem with this feature is that it's only supported by Internet Explorer 6, so unless you're prepared to downgrade back to IE 6 then you won't be able to use this particular feature. Now if you are using IE 6 and want to learn more about the Rerecording option, then you can always refer to the Adobe Captivate Help documentation and you can call the Help for any of the Recording options by simply clicking on this i button located here. To hide the Help you simply need to click on the Close button. I'll just very quickly resize this window so that you can see that. So, here's the Close button and like I say, just to close the Help just click it once. Sometimes you might find that these tools located over here on the left-hand side get in the way of the application you want to capture your screens from and for such occasions you can, in fact, hide the Recording Icons and Info by pressing Ctrl plus H on your keyboard. Now, at present when I'm trying to do this my Icons aren't being removed and I suspect this is just the way in which I'm capturing this particular tutorial. Now also, if for some reason pressing Ctrl plus H doesn't seem to work then you can, of course, just start by clicking on the red Recording Rectangle first to give it the focus and then try pressing Ctrl plus H again. Whilst on the subject of useful keyboard shortcuts another very useful keyboard shortcut is Alt +R, and this will start your Screen Capture Session. Again, if it doesn't seem to work try clicking first anywhere in the red Recording Rectangle. So, having defined the settings for my Automatic Recording Mode I can now just start the recording process by simply clicking on that Record in Selected Mode button. As before I'll very quickly just go through the steps. Now at present you can see that I have a little problem and that's that I've already got the Slider for the Security Level for the Zone down to Medium and it should really be at Medium High to start with. Now, one thing that I can do, of course, is just press the Pause or Break key on my keyboard, move this back up to where it should be and then unpause again, simply by pressing the Pause stroke Break key once more. Now because I want to make sure that I've got a screenshot of this particular screen what I'm also going to do here is I'm going to press that Print Screen key on the keyboard which will then enable me to manually create the screenshot and that's just a personal preference of mine. So having done that I'm now going to move it back down to the bottom like so and then click OK and then, having taken all my screenshots, I'm going to press a certain key on my keyboard and if you recall from the last tutorial we said that that was the End key, so I'll just press that and now you can see that we have some additional Information here in the Save Project Files dialog. Because I'm now recording multiple projects, by default we have the Assessment and Training textboxes with Assessment and Training at the end here, but at present the Start of that particular filename is called Untitled and, of course, I'll want to change that. So to do that I'm going to very quickly just type IE Security Settings and you can see how that Untitled text is now replaced with the filename that I've just entered in the Project Name textbox. Now, in addition, from the Project to Open I can actually specify which projects I want to open and start working on. Unfortunately, you can't open them both at the same time so, from this menu, I'm going to choose Training Simulation rather than Assessment Simulation. Clicking OK now opens that particular Training Simulation project in the Storyboard View. Now, before going any further I would encourage you to spend a few moments going through this and the Assessment project which you'll find in the Chapter 3 folder of the Work Files folder and compare the two. In addition, I'd also recommend that you explore the different objects that have been included in both of these project files.
