And now we get to talk about Adobe InDesign. Adobe InDesign is a page layout program and a very powerful one at that. You see, once you are done editing your images in Photoshop and your logos in Illustrator, you typically bring them into InDesign for page layout, meaning that we assemble them on the page. I have here this basic InDesign file, which you will find in your Work Files folder. And in this image, we have some vector elements, these little bars here in the text. And we also have some raster images brought in from Photoshop. We have some text that you might even bring in from Microsoft Word and then we use InDesign to basically assemble it and put it all together. So, InDesign does all that, but it does a whole heck of a lot more. InDesign features the most powerful set of typography tools in any program in the Creative Suite. And although not as powerful as Illustrator, we could also create several vector shapes and objects here in InDesign. And although not as powerful as Acrobat, we could also create PDFs, create links, create pages and all sorts of stuff. Now, just a little history about InDesign. It's actually a personal little story. When I was first learning about graphic design, I had to learn about the three biggies, Photoshop, Illustrator and at that time, Quark Express. Quark Express is another page layout program that competes with Adobe InDesign. At the time, there was no InDesign and Quark was the standard. You had to learn it. Well, I couldn't stand Quark. And I still can't stand Quark. And so I would always say that I hated page layout. It was the most boring thing ever imaginable. There is even times when I was just starting out and I was desperate for money, I had a new family, and I remember going to a job interview at a big Palm Springs newspaper in California and I remember sitting down and they said, "Well, actually we use more Quark than we advertise. We told you that you needed Photoshop and Illustrator and some Quark, but it's actually a big Quark job." And I remember just walking up and leaving and saying "You know what, I don't even want the job, I can't stand Quark. If I have to work on Quark, I don't even want the job, no thanks." So that is how much I hate Quark. But later on, when Adobe started coming out with InDesign, it started becoming more full featured and powerful like it is now. My jaw dropped. I don't hate page layout, I just hate Quark. So, I actually really enjoy using InDesign, I am amazed by the sweet arsenal of tools that is here in InDesign. And throughout even this brief glance at InDesign, we are going to be covering some amazing things. Way more about text boxes and overset text. We are going to be covering a little bit about pages, creating master pages, we are going to be talking about putting Word files in InDesign, how to correct spelling and all sorts of amazing things that InDesign can do. If you think page layout isn't very exciting and fun, let me try to change your mind on that one. InDesign is an absolutely amazing program and if you come from a background of Quark, you will love the opportunity to jump ship and come over to paradise. To Adobe InDesign.
