Creative Suite 2 Universals / Adobe Help Center
Subtitles of the Movie
So here we are in Adobe InDesign. Now just as a side note in the last segment we were in Illustrator. The segment before that we were in Photoshop and already your probably starting to see the great similarity between these amazing applications. We all have the document window here, some options on the top, the tools pallet on the left hand side. Again folks learning one of these applications is like learning the others. And as we actually go though this training series you'll see how real that is. Anyways back to task here. We have these two text boxes. They are connected via this thing called a Text Thread. One of my favorite parts about InDesign. If I click here in this box, go to type, fill with placeholder text. You'll see that the text filled this box then it immediately flowed through that one and went to this one. Now lets say I wanted to learn a little bit more about Text Threading. I can go to the Help menu and select InDesign Help. As you can see the keyboard shortcut directly across from the menu item here, F1 will automatically get us there as well. For now since I'm here I'm just going to click this to launch the Adobe Help Center. Now folks the one thing I've got to stress about the Adobe Help Center - it's not just this static dead document. It's not just this big, ugly, boring text document that you just scroll through and scroll through looking endlessly for an answer that you will probably will never find. That is not the Adobe Help Center. A couple of years ago that might have been your experience using the help that came with the program. That is no longer the case. So under Search For, you'll see that this is a live document. I'm going to type Text Threading. Lets hit Enter. Ok, it jumps right to it. As you can see these are all the options that come up using text and or threading throughout their topics. Simply click one to find out more about Text Threading. As you can see here too, that InDesign refers to this as threading text frames. I called it Text Threading. Eh. Tomato, Tomato. The Adobe Help Center, though, still understood the difference. Now this is where the Adobe Help Center gets even cooler. Lets say for example, that I'm more familiar with Illustrator and I want to see if I could just do this next time in Illustrator or if I have to do this in InDesign. Well in the old days you'd have to go and launch Illustrator open up Illustrator's help and then endlessly search through the Illustrator help for the answer probably never finding it, spending hours of frustrating time digging through this boring technical document. Now however, where it says Product Help Four - this is a drop down. This is a list of all installed Adobe applications. As you can see I'm quite a fan of what Adobe puts out. And from here we can just select Illustrator CS2 and as you'll see in a second we have access to Illustrator's help right here from the Adobe Help Center as launched by InDesign. Be aware that the Adobe Help Center also has its own help. It also has its own updates. It is a standalone application meaning that you can launch it by itself. Even if I didn't have InDesign or Illustrator open I could still launch the help center and use it. Also it pays to point out that the Adobe Creative Suite 2 as a whole has its own help as well. For now though I'm just going to select Illustrator CS2 and we're instantly brought to the help of Illustrator CS2. I already have Text Threading in my search box here so I'm just going to hit search - and right there - threading text between objects. As you can tell from this image we're under a different list here. This is referring to threading text in Illustrator not in InDesign. Feels pretty good that they didn't just cut and paste these images between the two applications because the way they work is slightly different. But again, be aware of the amazing time center that the Adobe Help Center is, enabling you to jump through the help menus of different applications with out ever going into those applications. In my opinion the Adobe Help Center revolutionizes the way that product help integrates with the software.
