Interface / Custom Workspaces
Subtitles of the Movie
No two creative people work alike, and if you've watched any of my other Tutorials you've heard me say that before, and it's quite true. Some people like to have a very hospital-like environment where everything's clean and perfect, and neat and straight, but me, I'm looking eye-to-eye right now with a Godzilla on my desk, and to my left I'm looking at a warrior with a shield and a sword, a skull on top of two candles, and a Batman, a 3-foot Batman, and a plant, and, a knight in shining armor. It's so sad. But that's how I have to work. I have to be surrounded by Ð oh, look, on the left of me I have about 40 toys on a shelf, and a Halo helmet Ð Halo, the video game Ð so as you can see, everyone has a different way of working. So what I want to do is show you how to create your own custom workspace inside of After Effects, because even though we have some Presets here, by going to Window, Workspace; or, go into our Tools here and choosing Workspace. These may not suit your particular work style. They may not have a tool that you want to have out at all times when you're working. So let's say, for example, you want, while you're working with the Standard Workspace to also have the Character Panel out, and you want to have the Brushes out. Well, that's fine. Bring those guys out and move them where you want them to go and then go to Window, Workspace, New Workspace. Now, you notice that I had to bring the Panels out first before I did this because the new workspace will be based on whatever you have out currently. So now I'm going to go to New Workspace and call this Chaos. I'll click OK, and if I look here, there it is: Chaos. So, you almost feel like a programmer because your own custom menu is now in this list. So now at any time I can go to a different workspace, so I can go up here and choose Animation, or I can go here and choose Chaos, and those tools and exactly where I placed them, will spring into view. It's a great feature, and I think you should take advantage of it, especially once you get more used to After Effects. Keep in mind that almost every application these days offers you the ability to create your own custom workspace. Now, let's say I don't want Chaos anymore. Notice that the little dot here tells me that I'm currently working with this workspace. This means that I can't delete this workspace because it's currently selected. So if I want to delete Chaos I have to go to a different workspace. Now I can go to Window, Workspace, Delete Workspace and Chaos is in this list. But let me just go ahead and Cancel that first and go back to Chaos and show you. So, I'm on Chaos, I'll go to Window, Workspace, Delete Workspace but notice that Chaos is not in the list. So, once again, when you want to delete a workspace you have to be out of that workspace first. So once again I'll go to Animation, or any other one, Window, Workspace, Delete Workspace, and now I can get rid of Chaos, and it's gone. Gone from the list here, and gone from the list over here. So, definitely take time once you get more familiar with the application to create a workspace that will have the tools that you want to see, or not. Don't forget, you can also get rid of these guys if they're too much for you to look at at one time and create a very nice clean and efficient workspace that deals with the task that you want to focus on.
