Footage / Import Stills

Subtitles of the Movie

Now that we've discussed how to import movies, let's take a look at another technique to import images, stills, or anything you want to bring into After Effects. You can literally drag and drop right into the Project Panel if you'd like. So, what I'm going to do, before I go through the Menu and show you how to import from multiple folders, I'm going to move my application over, go to my Desktop, and I have two different folders for Stills. So, I'm going to click on this Folder and drag it right on in and let go, and now that content is inside of After Effects. Likewise, I could do the same for Stills, and Audio. Now, you'll notice sometimes that if After Effects cannot understand a particular file type it will tell you, so don't be alarmed when that happens. After Effects can bring in different types of audio, but it's giving me a hard time with this particular file, so let me just go ahead and try to manually drag them in. So, evidently that Folder was giving it a hard time, so just go ahead and bring the files in themselves if you have that thing pop up like that. So, I'm going to Undo, and I'm going to show you how to bring in Stills from Multiple Folders. Now, as I showed you earlier I have two different Folders: one with two images and one with just one image. OK, so here we go. We're going to go to File, Import, Multiple Files. Now I'm going to go back to my Desktop, and as you see here I'm going to go to the first Stills Folder, and I'm going to click on just one, just to give you an idea of how this works, because it's pretty cool. The dialog box will keep opening until you're done. I'm going to click Open and now that file is here. If you look over in the After Effects Project Panel and the dialog box came right back Ð it wants more Ð so we're going to click Open and there's the other one, and it's still going. This dialog box will not go away until you dismiss it by clicking Done. So, I'm going to go to Stills 2, and grab the last image. OK, guy, I'm done, so we're going to go ahead and go to the bottom and choose Done, and that dialog box won't come back. So, it's really handy as I mentioned earlier when you know that you have a bunch of different files that you want to bring in but you may have forgotten to organize them all into a Folder on your Desktop, so you grab some things from your Desktop, you grab some things from another hard drive from a thumb drive, and so on, and you can bring them all into After Effects that way. Now, very quickly, let me show you how to Delete things that you don't want. As you can see I have three images, and let's say I don't want this guy here. Well, I have a Garbage Can that I can click on that will delete the selected object, so it's pretty handy and pretty quick. And one more very, very important thing that I need to mention about the importing of files. When you delete them, when you manipulate them, when you add special effects, color correction, et cetera, you are not affecting the actual footage. So, your pictures are safe on your hard drive. Your movies are safe. Even when you edit they are non-destructive, and After Effects is simply applying effects on top of those images that don't really exist on that footage. Those effects only live in After Effects. So if you go to your folders, everything is going to be pristine and untouched. So, once again, After Effects is like, like putting a jacket or a coat on top of something that you can always take back off when you quit the application.
