When you work in a studio environment or if you're working even on the Internet with other people and you're collaborating, you might want to find ways to communicate with each other so that people know exactly where things go. So let's say you're the animator and you're doing all the prep work in After Effects and you want someone on the other end to know exactly where to place certain parts of the audio; where explosions should go, where someone kicking down a door should go, all those kinds of sounds. Well, Markers are going to be the thing that you need and you'll find them right here in this little bin, this little icon. I can click and drag a marker right into the timeline like so and then with this marker I can double click on it and I can make notes. I can see the time, where the marker has been placed and I can enter a comment. For example, I can say, let's think here. I can put Explosion 1. So let's say that I provided someone with a whole folder full of different explosions and for this one I want Explosion 1 or let's say you're working on a Star Wars Fan Film and you want a particular light saber sound or, you know, the light saber opening or closing. So you can say Saber Opening or whatever you want to put. You can even have your marker act as a chapter marker or go to a website with the URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. So you could do all kinds of great things with markers. I'll click OK and check it out. It says Explosion 1. So this is a great way for someone on your team to just drop in the sound that it says. So let's make believe that this says Explosion 1. I'll just drag it and I'll put it right where the marker says and I'll try to line it up with my current time indicator and there it is. So my Explosion 1 is where it should be and I can drag out more markers. If you don't want a marker anymore, right click on it and choose Delete. I can choose this marker or all markers. I can even lock them so that I can't accidentally move them by mistake, which I've never done before. If you can believe that one. I also have the ability to place markers right inside of a layer and to do so I just have to make sure that I have that layer selected and I can hit the Asterisk Key on the numeric keypad. And as you can see here, a marker's been placed. And they work in the same exact way. I can double click on it and write notes. The true beauty to using the Asterisk Key is that I don't have to keep my eye in the timeline when I'm watching my footage. I can keep my eye on the playback and keep my finger right above that Asterisk. So if I have a, let's say I have to Jedi fighting. Every time those light sabers clash and grrr, woosh, I could press Asterisk and when another sound happens, I can press Asterisk again. I just keep pressing that and that person that's going to put that audio in there will know to put different types of light saber sounds there. So you can have this exciting light saber battle and all that person has to do is drop in light saber sounds all day long. Once again, keep your eyes here, press Play and just hit the Asterisk key on that selected layer and you'll always get your markers in place and in sync with the audio. You can move them around by clicking and moving them and once again, right click and you can delete them and they're gone. Markers are a great way to work with other people or just to keep yourself organized with the audio that you use in your compositions.
