Special effects applications such as Combustion give you the ability to create what are known as particles or some kind of dynamics system. Let me show you some examples of them, which are located in the effect menu. But first of all, I want to apply them to a layer solid, which is pretty much the norm when you're doing this kind of thing. So you would have your normal footage on one layer and then you would create a solid layer on top of that. In this case I'm going to call this one rain and then I'll go ahead and accept that. Now that I have my solid called rain, I'm going to go to the effect menu and I'm going to choose in the simulation category CC rain and right away you're able to see a simulation. I can go ahead and hit the space bar now and preview that rain. The beauty of dynamics, though, is that you have control over them, so I can change the amount of rain by using the controls to the left, the speed of the rain, the angle, the angle variance, the drop size, the opacity as well as the source depth. So once I'm happy, I have my own rain. Very easy. And once again, I can put that behind or rather in front of other footage. Very, very nice indeed. Now, let me show you a different type of particle effect or dynamics. I'm going to go ahead and get rid of my rain. As a matter of fact, I'll get rid of this whole solid here and create a brand-new one. So I'll create a new solid and I'm going to go to effect, simulation and this time I'm going to go to particle playground. Now, what you see here is called the cannon or a particle generator. When I hit the home key and I hit the space bar to play this, I can see right away some particles emitting from this cannon. In other applications, it's actually called an emitter. So what can you do with this? Well, I can twirl this cannon down and mov the position of it, change the barrel size, I can change the amount of particles and most importantly in this case, I can change the color. So let's say I make this white, or actually I'll make it green to make it interesting. Now, you might be asking yourself, that's great but what can I really do with this? These are kind of blocky. Well, you know what's really interesting about this particle thing? I can blur it. I can go to the effects menu, go to blur and sharpen and add a directional blur or any kind of blur. So I'll go ahead and choose this one and I'll change the direction and my blur length. I'll hit the home key and check it out. I've created some kind of cool warp-sphere thing going on. So you can do all kinds of interesting things by combining the different dynamics. So you can start out with a regular generator, add some blur to it, change the color of the particles and really, it's up to your imagination. You can do all kinds of things like make rain and tornadoes and that kind of thing. So what I suggest you do is synch the experiment. Open one particular generator up, change the color, change the gravity of it, play around with all the different effects that you find in these generators and you'll find that each one has a very different selection of, of tools that you can change. But in the end, what you might want to do as well is just save these presets and make your own.
