Introduction / New in After Effects CS3
Subtitles of the Movie
One thing you can always depend on from Adobe is that they're going to up the ante on their upgrades by significant margins. The same holds true for this version of after effects which as a tool that is just really, really, fun, I'm going to talk about that in just moment. But first of all the newest thing about the Creative Suite, Version 3, is that the applications within them interact with each other in a much more transparent way. So you can really go back and forth between after effects and Flash and after effects and Photoshop and Premier Pro, very, very easily and you can retain the special effects and the timelines and everything your working on, it's really, really great. Another great thing about After Effects CS3 is the new tools. The first tool- and of course I'll talk about much more in the actual tutorial itself, I'm going to show you a few here, is the puppet tool. The puppet tool allows you to take a still image such as this giraffe and animate it by adding what are known as pins. Let me just show you what I'm talking about, we have a pin tool here in our tools and we can add these little points to the actual still image to animate and deform the character. So you can do all kinds of stuff that you never thought of before. So you can take a still image and then animate it and have a puppet show. And you can do stuff like this, add more pins, and then you can deform the shape of an object, locking onto specific parts as well by adding more pins. So the pins help you stabilize what you don't want to animate. So I'll go ahead and do it, that pin I just added and show you. If I get rid of that pin the hump moves more freely, but when I add more pins, it kinds of locks them down so you have more control. So the hump can do more things, he can get his groove on. So all we need is a little Kool and The Gang playing and we have some stuff going here. Some other things After Effects CS3 has added is a way to integ- a way to experiment with different filters and its called brainstorm. As you see here in this particular composite I have three different effects applied to this brick wall. I have a blur, I have a bulge and I have a color-rama. If I want to see what else I could probably get with these mixtures, I could click on this little icon right here, which is a brainstorm and now I can see some other variations as to what I can do with those tools. And I can just play around and see which ones appeal to me and I can save those for later and I can click the randomize button or the brainstorm button to see other versions of that. And I'll talk more about brainstorm as well later on. But it's really a great way for you to start off with some ideas and then have after effects sitting next to you and come up with other concepts that you might want to play around with. So, not only is after effects more enhanced to work with other applications it's also got a faster, snappier performance as well. So, we're going to go ahead and get started and find out much, much, more about this new version of After Effects CS3 and I think you're really going to have a great time as you learn what this new version can do.
