Getting Around Inside Acrobat / Grid / Guides & Rulers
Subtitles of the Movie
Alright. Now, a lot of Desktop publishing programs allow you to work with guides and the grid and your rulers and so on. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, I'm definitely going to show you how this works. Acrobat provides these options for you as well because there is a slight layout component to Acrobat here. So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to head up to the View Menu here and choose Grid. Or there's my keyboard shortcut, Command U on the Mac or Control U on the Windows side. Turn that on there and there I get my Grid that's getting displayed right across my entire document here. I'm just going to zoom out a little bit, Command Minus or Control Minus. You can see that that grid is displayed right across my entire document there. So you can certainly use your Layout Grid if you want. I'm going to turn my Grid off by hitting Command U or Control U on the Windows side because I want to show you your Rulers and your Guides as well. So those options are also found underneath the View Menu. So I'll head up to the View Menu and then down to Rulers and I'm given a Vertical Ruler down the left-hand side and a Horizontal Ruler straight across the top here. Now I'm just going to zoom in a little bit. Now, I want to show you Guides. If you've worked with Guides in InDesign or Quark or Illustrator, Photoshop, it's exactly the same thing. If you've never worked with these before, here's the deal. These Guides are invisible lines. They'll only show up on the screen. They won't print out and they're useful for helping me line up objects inside my layout. So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to bring my cursor anywhere inside my Vertical Ruler because it's a Vertical Guide that I want to create. So anywhere inside that Vertical Ruler is just fine and then all I'm going to do is click and drag out right onto my page and then let go. And sure enough, I get this Guide sitting here. Of course I can create Horizontal Guides as well just by doing the exact same thing. Bring my cursor into the Horizontal Ruler and anywhere along this Horizontal Ruler will be just fine. Click and drag straight out onto the page. Something like this. Perfect. So you can drop in as many guides as you want, as many guides as your layout requires, something like this. Of course the other thing that I can do is temporarily disable my guides simply by heading up to the View Menu and then choosing Guides. Of course the Guides turn off, I can go back to the View Menu and turn them back on. Perfect. Now, if I want to get rid of some guides, all I have to do is click on it here. I can move it around if I want to, by the way, reposition it if I needed to or get rid of it just by hitting the Delete Key. Alright, there we are. So I'm going to turn off my Guides. Up to the View Menu and I'll choose Guides and I'm also going to get rid of my Rulers. I'm going to hit the keyboard shortcut for my Rules, Control R on the Windows side or Command R here on the Mac. So there we are. There's your Grid, your Guides and your Rulers.
