About Acrobat & the PDF File Format / Document Properties

Subtitles of the Movie

OK. There's one more thing I want to discuss here before we really get rocking here inside Acrobat and we've already been to this dialog box already a number of times. It's the Properties Dialog Box underneath the File Menu. So I'm going to choose File, Properties one more time. Usually when someone sends me a file, this is the first place I go because I want to know what I'm dealing with. And usually I'll check out the Security Tab because I want to know if there's any security on this file. But I wanted to take a moment and discuss the Description Tab. So I pop open the Description Tab and what I get is the area at the top here giving me the title, the author, the subject and any keywords. Now, most of this information in my PDF, anyway, is left blank but sometimes you'll see things in here like maybe I'll put my name in here, Geoff Blake, or maybe I could have some keywords in here and you could actually do a search for this content. For example, you could say pull up any PDF file that Geoff Blake authored that contains the following three keywords. You know, something like that. But anyway, you'll have this information at the top here. You can also find out a little bit more information on the file that you're working on. When was it created, when was it modified and this I love; what application created this file? I can tell that InDesign CS3 created this PDF file. Now, below that we have PDF Producer. Something called Adobe PDF Library 6 created this PDF file. What's the PDF version? It's Version 1.5. So just like your software applications, we have different versions for the PDF file formats. So 1.5 is native to Acrobat 6. Where is this file located? What's the file size? We just discussed that. This one is a helpful one for me; what's the page size? Is it something called a Tagged PDF? You see that? Come into play a little bit later on. No. Number of pages and is it using something called Fast Web? We'll talk about Fast Web View a little bit later on too. But anyway, the point here is oftentimes I'll come into this dialog box, get a little bit of information about the file. Not a huge amount but I can get a little bit of information, find out if there's any security on it and that kind of gives me a sense of what I'm dealing with. Alright. With that out of the way we're ready to take a tour of the Acrobat interface.
