You can change the shapes of objects by applying modifiers to them. So let's just create an object here, click on cylinder go to the centre of the front view port, click, hold and drag to create the base of the cylinder, release, go up to create the height of the cylinder, left click to stop creating this particular cylinder and right click because we are not going to be creating any more cylinders right now either. You apply modifiers in the modify panel, right here. And one way to do that is to click on the modifier list right here and then scroll down till you find the modifier that you want, and I am going to apply a bend modifier, I just click on it. And you can see it appears here in the stack list and you also get some parameters associated with the modifier. For example the bend modifier has an angle parameter. And I can change that, for example, I can highlight it and just type in a number. I type 90 and hit return and it gives me a 90 degree bend in my cylinder. You can also adjust parameters using the spinner. One way to do that is with the spinner arrows, there is an up arrow and an down arrow and click and hold on the arrow. I'm clicking and holding on the down arrow and it's making that angle smaller. Click and hold on the up arrow and it makes the angle larger. So lets put in an another modifier, click on the modifier list, scroll down and click on taper. And as you can see, that also appears in the stack list and it has a different set of modifiers associated with it. So let's try changing the amount of that taper. Now another way to work with these spinners is to click hold and move up or down. So moving up, I'm making the parameter larger, in this case I am making the taper amount larger. Moving down I make the taper amount smaller, in this case I can even go to a negative of amount. So the spinners are nice because you can interactively see the effect that you're having, and also it limits the range of values that it will use to the acceptable range. In the type-in box, if you type in something that isn't acceptable, it simply rejects it and puts in something that is acceptable. For example, maybe I type in 99, it puts in 10 because 99 is too large a number. It's not acceptable there. Whereas the spinner, once you get to 10 it just stops. You can click on any modifier in the stack list and change its parameter at anytime. For example, I can go back to the bend modifier and I can change the angle of the bend. You can also go back to the base object itself. In this case you can see it has a radius. I can change that, and a height, I can change that, and that also changes the end result. So those are the most important elements of the modify panel. The modify list, the stack list and the parameters. In addition you also have the object name, which can be changed just by typing in the new name. And here you have some buttons associated with a modifier set and you can click on these buttons to add modifiers. And you can see that's a lot faster then having to scroll through this modifier list. And you can configure which buttons appear here. And you do that right here, on the configure modifier sets button. Click on that and one thing you can do is just to choose an existing set, you get a different set of buttons depending on what you choose. The other thing you can do is, you can create your own custom set by going up to configure modifier sets. And the basic approach here is to drag and drop items from this list on to buttons here. As soon as you do this, the name of the set at the top there will disappear. You can continue to put new buttons here. You can also change the number of buttons. Maybe you only want four and when you’re ready to save your list, type in a name at the top and hit return. And that now becomes the active list and when you go to select lists, you will also see that it's there. Now this interface is designed to create new custom lists but not to edit existing lists. And we'll continue with our discussion of the modify panel in the next chapter. 48.0] Now this interface is designed to create new custom lists but not to edit existing lists.
