Subtitles of the Movie

In this chapter we are going to talk about naming and selecting objects. And we are going to continue with the model that we started in previous chapters, which is also available on the disk. Before we continue, let's give our friend a little bit more personality. Let's give him a hairdo and we can make his hair out of cones. I am going to give him a rather spiky hairdo. Click on the cone, notice that auto grid is selected and go until the cursor auto grids to the head. The cursor contains an XYZ tripod, so you can see it when it auto grids to the head. See how it changed there, as you're coming over there, it auto grids to the head and it also says 'head' to let you know what you are auto gridding to. Now we'll create a cone on the head. Click and hold, drag just a little bit to create the base of the cone, then release, drag upwards to create the height of the cone. Click and release, drag downwards to bring the tip of the cone together and click to finish. Let's do that a few more times. Click and hold, drag a little bit, release. Up, click, down, click, click and hold, drag, release. Up, click, down, click, click and hold, drag, release, up, click, down, click, alright and then right click to get out of cone creation mode. We are going to start out now by looking at the selection tools on the main toolbar. One of them we've already been using, it's the select object tool, it just looks like an arrow, and when it hits an object it turns into a crosshair. You see the name of the object and you can left click on the object to select it. And you can hold down the control key and you can do the same thing selecting multiple objects. And if you click on an object that's already selected with the control key down, you deselect it. Now let's take a look at the next selection tool which is select by name. You click on that and you get a list of names and the selection method is the same. Left clicking and holding down the control key to select multiple objects on the list. And then finally you click select here and the objects are selected. There are also a number of ways to select using a selection region. The kind of selection region that you use is determined right here. The default is the rectangular selection region. So for example, if we click and hold and drag we get a selection region and anything within that region is going to be selected. You notice that it has to be completely within the box. That's because we are in window mode, which means only things that are completely within that window are going to be selected. There is also a crossing mode that’s selected right here, this is a toggle between window and crossing mode. If I click here, now I come back and I start selecting, anything that it crosses will be selected. Anything that is even partially within the box gets selected. I am going to put that back in window mode again. Now you can change the shape of the selection region right here. You click and hold and you get a fly out, and you have a choice between a circular, a fence where you draw straight lines and a lasso where you can draw preformed lines. So let's try the lasso here. So lassoing is just a one click operation, just click and hold and drag the lasso out and there we selected that hair. And we just click, hold, drag, there we go, we selected the left eye and the nose. Why don't we go and try and use the fence. So we can see the difference between the lasso and the fence. The fence, you click and hold, draw your line, release, click and hold and draw your next line, release, click and hold, draw your next line release, click and hold and draw your final line and your object or objects are selected. d and draw your next line, release, click and hold, draw your next line release, click and hold and draw your final line and your object or objects are selected.
