Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we are going to look at some of the new features in 3ds max 5, features that were not there in version 4 of the program. There are a number of user interface changes, but probably the most important one has to do with the new transform gizmos. And those are the visual aids that allow you to see how you can control movement, rotation and scale. So these gizmos have been improved. One of the new modeling features is the character assembly. This is a new type of object that contains all the objects belonging to a character. And it allows you to treat all the objects in the character as one and perform operations on them as one thing. That's quite convenient. There are also some bones tools, bones are just what they sound like, they are objects that allow you to control characters through a skeleton-like assembly. There are enhancements to the editable polygon surfaces so that you can create more subtle and interesting shapes. There are soft selection enhancements that allow you to select objects in a way that tapers off gently, rather than having to have hard edges to your selections. There are a number of modifier enhancements, modifiers are attributes that you can apply to objects. For example, there is skin modifier and the skin is what goes over the bones when you use bones, there is an unwrapped UVW modifier, that has to do with how you apply materials to objects. For example, this airplane which needed to be painted in a certain way, you can see you are able to flatten that out and paint it flat. That's a lot easier. HSDS hierarchical sub-division surfaces, allow you to work with and display models at various levels of resolution, so that you can do most of your work for example with a very simple model. It's very quick and easy to work with and doesn't take a lot of processing power. And then, when you are putting the finishing touches on it, you can apply the HSDS modifier to add a lot of refinements to the model that will make it look better. Morphing which has to do with changing from one shape to another. We now have more control over that. There are a number of new modifiers, for example, there is symmetry modifier for creating symmetrical objects. This was possible in previous versions of 3ds max, but it's a lot easier now, you can be a lot more productive. A vertex weld modifier, when you are creating an object from a number of other objects, by putting them together, makes it easier to weld those objects together. Layers, which is a tool for organizing your scene. New material features, materials are the colors and patterns and so on that you use to paint your objects so to speak, one of the new material features is the ink and paint material which is used for cartooning. This is a great new feature. The piece of software within 3ds max that makes the material appear on an object is called a shader, and there is a new translucent shader now that gives you the effect of light passing through an object. This is great for substances like etched glass for example which isn't completely transparent but also isn't completely opaque. There are number of advanced lightning techniques. There is an advanced lightning override material that allows you to control whether a light just shines and gives of light or whether it actually illuminates the scene. As you can see here we have a neon light in the scene but it is not lighting up to scene. But in this scene down below, it actually contributes light to the scene. So, in this first half of our review of new 3ds max5 features, we have covered user interface changes, new modeling features and new material features. And in the next half we are going to go on to the new animation features, advanced lighting features and new rendering features. s and new material features. And in the next half we are going to go on to the new animation features, advanced lighting features and new rendering features.
