As I mentioned in the last lesson, after you create an index, and add and delete documents from the index folder or subfolders, the index becomes obsolete. When you open an index with deleted documents, the original versions of the modified documents and deleted documents, the titles of these documents, still remain in the index. When you try and select a title that no longer appears in the folder or subfolders your index is in, Acrobat will display a warning dialog box to that effect. You should periodically purge any index that you use frequently and you update with new documents, or by deleting old documents. And to do this, to purge a PDF index, you choose advanced, catalog, and then you open the index you want to purge. And in this case I am going to purge the index we have just created. I have deleted some files from some of these folders and added files to other folders to show you how this will work. When I click Open, see I can also change some of my options here, when I rebuild and purge the catalog. First thing I want to do is purge, when I click the purge button, you see it happened pretty quickly because I did not delete that many files. So starting purge, deleting files from current index, index purge successful. And now you want to rebuild the index so to do this you open the index and again I am choosing Tutorials.pdx, I will open it, and now I choose rebuild, and Acrobat begins rebuilding the index again, it’s pretty much the same process as you saw before, but see now we have only got a 156 files in the index, because I deleted some and added some others. And we will just let Acrobat do its thing here for a couple of minutes, and I will pause the lesson and show you the end progress report. And there are the results of our rebuild, 157 files Acrobat was able to catalog, create an index of a 156 files, and it indexed 1431 pages and skipped 1 file. When you build or rebuild an index, Acrobat will create a document called Tutorials.log, that contains all of the information. I have already gone ahead and navigated to this, and opened this up in WordPad, and you see there are a couple of errors extracting words, but over all, few more errors extracting words, and if you look through this closely enough, you could find the file that was skipped, that contained the bad information. And that is how you would build and rebuild and purge a catalog index. Now that is why it would not open it up, there is one document that required a password, and that is why it was not included in the index.
