Getting Started / Components of Acrobat

Adobe acrobat comes in a few different forms, which we need to discuss here. The first form that you might have seen because it is the most popular is called Acrobat reader. Now what the reader does is it's a piece of software, which allows you to view and read Adobe acrobat pdf files. Again pdf is the file format that acrobat writes out and it stands for portable document format. The acrobat reader comes with a lot of software itself because very often user manuals or updates to software are at the last minute created and saved as acrobat files and then added to a Cd-rom or added to the website. So if you have acrobat reader on your computer and it's pretty likely that you will have reader, it's probably the one you are most familiar with. Essentially as I mentioned earlier that reader allows you to read and print, and it gives you a very robust selection of tools to do these things. Adobe acrobat the software adds to the capabilities that reader gives you and it gives you many other options for: adding interactivity, and different types of authoring capabilities beyond what reader can do. Reader of course just allows you to view a document acrobat the software allows you to add all sorts of other things such as security features, interactivity, generating forms and what not. So acrobat the software is a software that you can really add a lot of capabilities to a document, a pdf document that you have created. Acrobat browser plug-ins allow world wide web browsers such as Microsoft explorer and Netscape communicator to, open up an acrobat document directly in the browser; and I am going to talk about some of the features of the browser plug-in because, obviously it is a very popular way of looking at an acrobat document. Since pdf files are designed for electronic delivery you will see a lot of pdf files on the world wide web, And it's obviously a great way to communicate some piece of information in a document format other than html. Because this way you can instantly download this and view it in your browser but really viewing it with the acrobat reader tools. And one of the options of course is being able to save the document onto your hard drive, assuming that the author has given you that kind of security feature. Acrobat is also designed to take advantage of many third party plug-ins, so it's an extensible application, with a whole host of capabilities that third party companies can take advantage of and add to. One of the big areas for this is the document security and companies such as VeriSign are creating very secure document handlers. And in this way you can actually conduct legal business such as binding contracts, as acrobat documents so you no longer have to mail a printed document through the mail or federal express. You can with the use of acrobat and third party security plug-ins create a situation, where you have legally binding documents, and signatures that are electronic through acrobat. So it's a very robust publishing solution. As I mentioned acrobat comes in, in two forms the most popular one is the reader and that is available in many different places. Most notably you can download the reader software from adobe's website. And since many different web site publishers publish pdf documents. They will assume that you might not have reader on your computer, although that is becoming less and less realistic as more and more people just have reader on the computer because reader is a free piece of software. And it is also freely distributable with a few licensing agreements from adobe - so chances are that you already have the reader on your computer. And as I mentioned acrobat the software allows for going beyond what reader can do and giving you a full range of authoring capabilities. Some other components of the acrobat are the software; Acrobat software or acrobat reader which is a reduced subset of features that acrobat has. And then a very important piece of software, which actually comes with acrobat, is called distiller. And what acrobat distiller does is it generates pdf files from raw postscript. Most print drivers allow you to instead of sending your document directly to a printer allows you to print to a postscript file And that's what acrobat distiller wants, this separate program; and what acrobat distiller's function is to take postscript and create a pdf file, which of course acrobat reader or acrobat can read, and view. And we are going to talk about how you can setup distiller in some of the subsequent (movies). which of course acrobat reader or acrobat can read, and view. And we are going to talk about how you can setup distiller in some of the subsequent (movies).
