Another cool feature you can employ using Acrobat distiller is automating the process of having distiller, open postscript files and process them distilling them into pdf files and the way you do that is you set up what's called watched folders. So I am going to make sure that distiller is active by bringing it to the forefront here and go to settings and choose Watched folders. And it brings up this dialog box and asks me to create a folder. Well I haven't done that yet so I am going back to my desktop, my finder here and in my Acrobat demo folder I am going to create a folder called ajh job options. And what's cool about this is, you can actually create as many folders as you want obviously and have different job options, be attached to each folder. So you can have one folder that when you put postscript in it, it's only designed to create, low-resolution web based viewing documents and you can have other folders that are designed to have distiller process the postscript for pre press or high end offset press output. So to get along with the demonstration here, here is my one folder that I have created. So, I'm going to go back to the watched folders dialog box and you can see in my list here I don't have any folders so I am going to click the add button and basically brings up a box, a Dialog box asking me to go navigate and find that watched folder and it has already found it in my Acrobat demo folder. Here is the folder I need called ajh job options, so I'm going to click choose and you can see that it adds it immediately to the list. I have some other options available to me I can choose to at this point enforce security parameters for any pdf files that get processed in here. I click on the security button and it brings up the dialog box for different security parameters. Do you want to add passwords to open or change the document, and do you want to enable Content to be accessible for visibly impaired, do you want to allow copying and extraction and further and what not. All of these things can be changed at a later time. You can enforce these security parameters by editing them in Acrobat, after you have a pdf file. So I will just click cancel to this. I will click on the job options button and you can see it brings up, the current settings for however I had left the distiller dialog box. So I will click cancel and go to distiller here and you can see that, I had my own custom settings - ajh press 5. Go back to watched folders and if you click job options it brings up the job options, tabbed interface for that particular collection of settings. Another way to do this is to choose load options. If you click on the load options box it brings up the file that is actually the collection of job options settings for whatever it is listed in that pop up menu. So you can see I have one for my own custom one and these are the other ones that come predefined in Acrobat distiller. So at this point I could say - well I'm going to make this my e-book watched folder - and when you do that, now you can see it has added this extra little icon here which means that there are specific job options attached to this watched folder. If you want to get rid of those you can click clear options. Check watched folder every 10 seconds, you can change this from one second to 9,999 seconds, which is something like about 2 1/2 hours. What do you want done with your postscript file after it is finished process - you have a couple of options: you can have it be deleted or moved to the out folder and of course what happens is that once you drag the postscript file in the in folder, the pdf file is put in the out folder; and finally give an option to delete output files older than how many days you choose to, to add here. So I'll click ok and now that I have set up the parameters for my watched folder, I'm going to open up my watched folder and you can see, that what illustrator did you can see that what Acrobat distiller did was it added two folders in here one called in and one called out, and it also added a collection of job options for this particular folder and in this case this one looks to the e-book job options. So in order to get this automated and under way all you need to do is to save a file into the in folder that is save a postscript file or in this case I am just going to drag this postscript file into my in folder. You can see it has been added there and in a few moments, you'll notice that distiller will begin processing that file - and there you have it. Here's is my pdf, based on the original postscript file and you can see that it is also moved my postscript file into the out folder. So using watched folders in Acrobat distiller is a great way of automating the process and saving a lot of time, and it's also another way that you can have one folder generate pdf files for low-resolution web viewing, and have an other folder generated for high resolution prepress. you can have one folder generate pdf files for low-resolution web viewing, and have an other folder generated for high resolution prepress.
