Introduction / How it Works: A High-Level View
Subtitles of the Movie
In this video we're going to be looking at, in the broadest terms possible, what we're going to accomplish over the course of this video series. So, the first thing that you need to know is that you'll be supporting client computers and these may be running Windows, Mac, or Linux, and they may be distributed in an office park, or in a room, or all over the world. But the one thing that they will have in common is that they'll all be running Adobe AIR. Now for your part, you'll be running a server and on your server you'll have information like files, database records, and all sorts of things that you want to keep in one central location and make available to the clients. On your server you'll be running PHP and you'll use PHP to serve this information to the clients and to accept new information from the clients. We'll serve database records and record sets to the AIR clients that we have and we'll also accept new information from them and store it so that all the other clients can gain access to it. We'll also be accepting file uploads and sending file downloads from the Server using PHP, so what's the payoff in this situation? Well, your users will have a good experience because you could create really nice looking, aesthetically pleasing applications that react to what they do and therefore seem more responsive and quick, and you'll get flexibility because you can use PHP and whatever else you want to underneath PHP on your server. So, in short, you'll be happy.
