Introduction / About Adobe AIR
Subtitles of the Movie
In this video we're going to talk a little bit more about Adobe AIR, and to begin with we'll ask what is Adobe AIR? Well, AIR stands for the Adobe Integrated Runtime and that's across platform runtime. Basically what that means is that it's a wrapper for Rich Internet applications to be installed on many different Operating Systems, including Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux. There are some key points to keep in mind when we're talking about Adobe AIR. AIR is freely available and downloadable from the Adobe website, just like the Flash Player is. AIR supports many languages from around the world. You can also build AIR applications with HTML and JavaScript. HTML and JavaScript are rendered inside of AIR applications using the open source WebKit HTML and JavaScript engine so you can use an HTML editor like Dreamweaver to create AIR applications, but you can also build AIR applications with Flex Builder. Traditionally Flex produces swf files, or Flash movies that would normally run in a browser, but with the release of Adobe AIR support has been added for the Flex Builder or the open source Flex SDK to output AIR applications natively. The applications we're going to create are going to be built in Flex Builder. The IDE, or Integrated Development Environment published by Adobe, reflects development. Flex applications can be built for AIR, or for the Flash Player in a browser like I mentioned before, but the AIR SDK gives developers access to more features that are specific to Adobe AIR. Many people wonder what the difference is between AIR and Flash. Well, they're both Virtual Machines like Java, and they're sometimes referred to as the ActionScript Virtual Machine. This just means that there's a separate layer between the Operating System and the program that handles the execution of the code. This is what enables code execution on multiple Operating Systems. Adobe AIR adds more access to the underlying operating system so developers can interact with the Operating Systems Doc or Start Menu, or Taskbar in addition to files, network connections, and more. Unlike Flash applications, AIR applications are packaged into installers, which are more familiar to users and similar to traditional installers and post installation they can open and run the application like they do other applications on their Operating System.
