Getting Started / Installing Flex Builder as a Plug-In

Subtitles of the Movie

In this video we're going to be downloading Adobe Flex Builder Plug-in. To begin, go to adobe.com/products/flex. On this page chose the Try Flex Builder 3 link. Scroll down to the bottom of the Download page and choose your platform from the drop-down, then click the Download button. You'll be prompted to save the executable file. When the download is complete, open up the Plug-in Installer. Choose your language and click OK. Choose Next through the Introduction and accept the License Agreement. Once again, leave the default installation folder as the Installer specifies. For the existing Eclipse folder, click the Choose button and navigate to the directory where you installed Zend Studio for Eclipse. If you chose the defaults it will be under Program Files on a 32-bit Windows installation, or Program Files, x86 on a 64-bit installation. From the Program Files directory, go to the Zend folder and then choose the Zend Studio for Eclipse-Version number folder. Click Next. On the Additional Installations page, deselect the Flash Player installations. These are a little bit outdated and we'll be, instead, installing the latest versions from Adobe. Review the Pre-Installation Summary and make sure everything's correct, then click Install to begin the actual installation process. At the time of the production of this video there as a bug in the Flex Builder Plug-in Installer that caused it to throw this error. The problem is that the link can't be established between the Flex Builder Plug-in and the existing installation of Zend Studio, so we'll have to do it manually once the installation is completed. Dismiss the message by clicking OK and the installer will continue. Once the installation is complete you'll receive this message that there were some errors during the install. Don't worry. That's just referring to the message we talked about just a minute ago. Click Done and you'll be presented with the Installation folders for both Zend Studio and Flex Builder. Next, open up Zend Studio. If you get an alert about Windows Firewall, make sure you Unblock it. Once Zend Studio is opened up, close the Welcome screen to get to the Workspace, then choose Help, Software Updates, and then Manage Configuration. In the Window that appears, choose Add an Extension Location. In the files user window, navigate to the folder where you installed the Flex Builder 3 Plug-in. It'll be beneath Program Files, Adobe, then Flex Builder 3 Plug-in. Click OK and you'll be prompted to restart Zend Studio for Eclipse. Choose Yes to restart it right away. Once Zend Studio is loaded back up, we'll verify the Flex Builder 3 Plug-in installation by choosing Window, Open Perspective, and then Other. Now from this popup you should see several entries for Flex. We're going to choose Flex Development and click OK. If you have the Flex choice and it loads up properly resulting in the Flex Start Page being displayed, your Plug-in is installed correctly and we're ready to proceed.
