What is Aperture? Yeah, so what is this app that we're going to be exploring here? That's a great question. Welcome everybody to Aperture 3. My name is Sam McGuire and I'm going to be your guide as we explore a lot of the features of what this app can do. Its strengths, its weaknesses and as we really get under the hood and use this thing. So the first question I always get when people are asking about Aperture is; is it like Photoshop? Well yes and no. Photoshop does so many more things and is part of a much bigger eco-system of apps with the whole of Adobe Suite that Aperture really doesn't compete with that in a lot of ways. Aperture is more specifically designed to really deal with photos and photo enhancement and photo management and metadata management rather than some of the things that Photoshop can do. So in Photoshop we'll have different layers, we can cut up the image in ways and really remove things with very specific masks and a bunch of other things which we just can't do in Aperture. Now Aperture the strength of this program is in getting amazing results with relatively efficient amount of time put in to it. What that really means is that you might be a novice or an intermediate or even an advanced photographer and be able to get really great results with a little bit less of a learning curve in something like Photoshop. Also as an extension of a product line with iPhoto on the iOS platform and iPhoto on the Mac. So if you're using one of those you're going to be able to ease into this at a different pace and just get a lot of stuff. So what we're going to do; this whole course is going to be designed at getting you into the features of Aperture but do I need to make one caveat that we're not going to be explaining how to take pictures. This is not a photography course. I'm not going to be explaining how to use your camera and all the settings that are associated with it. Instead you'll be expected to bring some of that knowledge to this course. So you're going to need to have some knowledge about how to use your camera so that when I say this is the enhancement or the adjustment you'll make to work with your exposure settings on your camera. Well you may not know exactly what that means and if that's the case you'll need to do a little research so that you'll understand how the setting in Aperture applies to what you're doing with you camera. Now in most cases this is not going to be a big leap because you're going to be able to point your camera, take a picture and many of you are going to understand all the settings that go into that. And for those of you that don't you're still going to understand when we make an enhancement on the screen, the color changes, the contrast changes you're going to see those differences. Okay, let's jump in, we're going to spend a couple of minutes just talking about some basic interface things before we start getting into the meat and potatoes of this course.
